Maniratnam’s ‘Ravanan’: Music Review

Raavanan - An antithesis in itself has made its way into the decks of the music stores! Mani Ratnam’s contemporary take on the classic epic has all the right ingredients to make it a feisty treat for the music lovers with his saga liaison with his musical whiz kid A R Rahman.

Ravanan

Rahman has given this album a clannish yet nontraditional red-hot fusion of sounds. Vairamuthu has penned down the lyrics and the flamboyancy of it reveals itself as an outburst in those semi-devotional genre songs.

Veera, as the title suggests is a bold and cult semi devotional song on the Ravanan of the movie. The voice of Vijay Prakash infuses with the beats and breaks the routine of shrill voiced protagonist introductions most movies flaunt these days. The interlude by Rahman and Keerthi blends with the melody of the song that it is hard to say them apart! Sure to be a chartbuster.

Yet another signature song by Rahman is the Karthik sung ‘Usure Pogudhey’. It has Rahman written all over it and the poignancy yielded to it by Karthik lingers around longer than any other solitude song. The haunting melody and the husky voice is a true melancholy of sorrow and its depth in one’s heart. This one is the reminiscent of Uyire of Bombay and will stay evergreen for those who loved the latter.

Benny Dayal has done it yet again. The song ‘Kodu Potta’ is a head banger! The fusion of heavy beats and the electric voice of Benny make it a perfect cult rock song; And as the icing on the cake comes the Arabian medley which takes you into an illusionary world of war and conflicts.

The only in the album and probably the best of the duets of recent times would be the eclectic “Kaattu Sirukki” with voices lent by the versatile Anuradha Sriram and Shankar Mahadevan whose mere mention would make it a top notch song. The rhythm is mesmerizing and makes you sway with the beats. The interlude by Anuradha is intoxicating and this ballad with its haunting lyrics of love, lust and loneliness is sure to top the charts for weeks to come! Remixes are certainly going to get the dance floors ignited at the clubs!

Shreya Goshal’s “Kalvare” makes this album take a twist in the narration of its gist and life. It may not be the best of the lot but is sure to blend with the movie and will make you google for this post the movie’s release. Probably the only song for “Raman” and that makes it worthwhile. The composed subtle hymn of this song might predominantly reign over the background score.

The last but not the least is the medley of sounds, instruments, pitches and pulsating voices! Rahman has already created a magic with his Rukumani song from Roja. The taboo themed song “Keda Kari” is rather a controversially versed rhapsody. The vivid language and the orchestral overture of Benny, Tanvi Shah and dear old Rehana is ecstatic and promises us a grand opera on screen!

Ravanan is a must buy for all those Rahman lovers and an impulsive buy for the music lovers. Mani Ratnam has set the expectations soaring high with the music all geared up to set the floor on fire!.
